Tragedy cut Joe Delaney’s career — and his life — far too short.

Two years after he was chosen by the Kansas City Chiefs in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft, Delaney died at the age of 24 while trying to rescue three children in a northeastern Louisiana pond on June 29, 1983.

Delaney’s brief two-season career offered a tantalizing glimpse at potential greatness.

As a rookie, Delaney rushed for 1,121 yards en route to a Pro Bowl berth, AFC Rookie of The Year award, and left an indelible mark on the Chiefs.

Delaney went on to set the franchise record for most yards in a season, in a game, and most 100-plus yard games in a season. He still holds the Chiefs’ record for most rushing attempts by a rookie, with 234.

The following season, Delaney’s last, he only appeared in eight games due to the NFL Players’ strike and a detached retina that required surgery. Delaney still rushed for 380 yards in his sophomore season, while averaging four yards per carry.

The Chiefs inducted Delaney into the organization’s Hall of Fame, Ring of Honor, and have yet to give out Delaney’s No. 37 again, 38 years after his passing.
