Aaron Rodgers has affirmed his place as the NFL MVP frontrunner with the Green Bay Packers.
Did we all forget how good Aaron Rodgers is? It seemed nearly everyone and their mother wrote him off before the season began, but the Green Bay Packers‘ quarterback is arguably playing the best football of his career in 2020. Is there any question that Rodgers should be considered the favorite to win the NFL MVP Award?
The Packers are the No. 2 seed in the NFC with a record of 9-3 after 12 games, thanks in large part to Rodgers’ incredible playmaking this season. While Green Bay already has many losses as it had all of last season (13-3), it’s probably fair to say the team is more complete in 2020 and Rodgers playing at an MVP level is a huge reason why.
Rodgers displayed another incredible performance on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles when he threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns on 25-of-34 passing. It was his ninth game with at least three touchdown passes. Just another day at the office for No. 12.
It’s been a season of milestones for Rodgers this season. Against Philly, he became the first player in NFL history to record at least 35 touchdown passes in five separate seasons. He also became the fastest player with 400 passing touchdowns (193 games). The week prior, Rodgers eclipsed 50,000 passing yards, becoming the second-fastest player to do so in NFL history.
Aaron Rodgers deserves to win his third NFL MVP award in 2020
Rodgers has won two MVP awards in his career thus far (2011, 2014), but his 2020 campaign has arguably been better than both of those seasons – which is saying something, considering his 2011 season one of the greatest quarterback seasons ever.
Green Bay’s signal-caller is on pace to break his previous career-high in touchdown passes (46), which would also break the Packers’ franchise record. He’s also only thrown four interceptions this season.
To pile on, Rodgers currently leads the NFL in both touchdown passes (36) and passer rating (118.5). Russell Wilson is next closest in passing touchdowns (32), while Patrick Mahomes is next closest in passer rating (113.8). Rodgers is currently ranked the No. 1 overall quarterback by Pro Football Focus (subscription required). Mahomes is second.
If that wasn’t enough, Rodgers has had over a 100 passer rating in 11-of-12 games this season. He’s thrown four touchdowns in 5-of-12 games. Simply put, Rodgers has been on another level in 2020.
Assuming he keeps up his current pace, Rodgers should be able to clinch his third MVP award, joining Peyton Manning, Jim Brown, Tom Brady, Johnny Unitas and Brett Favre as the only three-time winners.
