The Los Angeles Chargers should officially be searching for a new coach.
The Los Angeles Chargers have built something of a legacy over the last couple of seasons of losing wildly entertaining games in heartbreaking fashion. Unfortunately, the 2020 season has been no different as NFL fans have been tuning in week after week to see the show, which almost always ends in a Chargers loss.
It’s caused many to call for the firing of head coach Anthony Lynn. And with the recent defeat at the hands of the New England Patriots, there’s no denying it anymore. Changes have to be on the way.
This wasn’t any old loss. It was a 45-0 shellacking. The Patriots had two special teams touchdowns and the Chargers’ own unit seemed lost. They didn’t have enough players on the field five different times and it was a game in which Patriots’ quarterback Cam Newton threw for 69 yards. Losing by 45 points in that type of scenario is preposterous. Suffice to say, the Chargers offense couldn’t get anything going either.
Speaking of the Chargers’ offense, that brings us to Justin Herbert. Lynn as a coach just isn’t working. It’s as simple as that and the loss to New England was the apex of that.
Anthony Lynn is putting a cap on the ceiling of the Los Angeles Chargers with Herbert.
The Chargers need to bring in a coach that can maximize the colossal potential of Herbert. He has been arguably the most impressive rookie quarterback, and the Chargers need to bring in a staff that can mold him as his career takes off.
The Chargers’ roster is also loaded with talent. That won’t last forever, so the team needs to maximize their opportunity with this window that they have with a young core including not just Herbert, but guys like Joey Bosa and Derwin James on defense.
The other reason the Chargers need a new coach is for the desperate need for relevancy in Los Angeles. There are a plethora of sports teams in the city, all of which successful, save for the Chargers. A splash coach hiring would bring some much-needed attention for the team, that would help the franchise both on and off the field.
SoFi Stadium has been empty due to COVID but the Chargers will have to fill it eventually. The gorgeous uniforms alone just won’t cut it.
The heights this team can potentially go is unknown, as is the coach that will take them there with this quarterback. Health has always been a huge question mark with the Chargers as well. What isn’t a mystery, however, is that a change needs to be made.
