Washington Football Team wide receiver Cam Sims is staking his claim on a bigger role.

There was no question who the number one wide receiver would be for the Washington Football Team heading into 2020. Terry McLaurin is one of the best in the entire NFL. However, after that, they have plenty of unknowns. That’s where Cam Sims comes in.

Washington has some exciting options at wide receiver after McLaurin. Two of the more enticing options at the start of the year were second-year Kelvin Harmon and rookie Antonio Gandy-Golden. Harmon suffered an injury and missed the entire year though. Meanwhile, Gandy-Golden needs time to adjust to the NFL and suffered an injury as well. That left Washington scrambling.

Slot receiver Steven Sims Jr. is a weapon but has not been featured as much in the offense this year. And when he went down with an injury too, Washington was suddenly in a very tight spot. All of that led to them trying a few things. Two of those options were Cam Sims and Isaiah Wright.

Wright is more of a slot receiver and, while he did have some nice moments he doesn’t seem to be in favor at the moment (especially with Steven Sims back). Cam Sims has always had enticing size (6-5). However, for what feels like years Washington has been figuring out what to do with him. All that wonder led to two receptions for 27 yards heading into the season.

The 24-year-old is getting a larger role due to all the craziness surrounding the position in 2020 though. So far, he has capitalized. Sims has 18 receptions for 337 yards and one touchdown. That’s an average of 18.7 yards per reception and he’s certainly had his highlights this year.

Those highlights include a few plays with major yards after catch that showcased his speed, as well as his stiff arm and juking abilities. Then there are plays like the one he made on Monday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. With the game on the line, he made the play of the game.

Not only that, but the wide receiver finished Washington’s most important game of the year so far against the (at the time) 11-0 Steelers with five receptions for 92 yards. The five receptions were a career-high and the 92 yards were his second-highest ever.

Now, Sims is not perfect. He has had some drop issues and this isn’t an argument for him to be their definitive number two for the next few years. However, Sims is explosive. He makes big plays, and most importantly he might make a team worry about him a little bit. That’s what you need besides McLaurin, someone that might get some pressure off the star.

For now, Sims should be the No. 2 receiver in Washington. He deserves a shot for the rest of the year. The wideout has proven he can make the big play and help the team win. Washington is just 5-7 but in a great spot to sneak into the playoffs. They need all hands on deck.

Right now that means Sims should be on the field often. Not only does it give them the best chance to win, but it serves as a long-term audition. In big-time games can Sims continue to produce? Maybe he proves himself as a valuable asset for the future. It’s the perfect time to find out.
