The Los Angeles Rams took Jared Goff No. 1 overall in 2016, the right move for LA.

In the 2016 NFL Draft, quarterbacks went No. 1 and No. 2 respectively. Not only that, but two teams who didn’t have the worst records the previous season traded up prior to the draft to ensure that they’d get one of those two guys.

The quarterbacks were Jared Goff out of California and Carson Wentz out of North Dakota State and the teams who traded a lot to move up were the newly relocated Los Angeles Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Rams were looking for a spark after they moved from St. Louis to Los Angeles and hoped that trading into the top spot of the draft and getting their franchise quarterback would do just that.

Leading up to the draft, it went back and forth as to who the No. 1 pick would be — Goff or Wentz? The Rams ended up going with the deemed “safe” pick and took Goff with the No. 1 overall pick while the Eagles then happily took Wentz at No. 2.

For the first few years, it looked as though the Los Angeles Rams made the wrong choice.

While Goff strolled the sidelines for over half of his rookie season, Wentz started all 16 games for the Eagles. He wasn’t brilliant, but he made nice throws and finished the season with a 7-9 record. The race was too close to call at that point, but in 2017, it looked as though Wentz was the better quarterback by a mile.

The 2017 season saw Wentz put on a fireworks display at quarterback as he threw for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns, and seven interceptions while leading his Eagles to an 11-2 record. Wentz was injured — oddly enough — against the Rams late in the year and missed the rest of the season. That included the Eagles’ playoff run and their Super Bowl victory.

Meanwhile, Goff was fine, but he wasn’t playing at the MVP level that Wentz had been before the injury. Rams fans were likely kicking themselves while watching Wentz tear it up because he could have been their quarterback.

The next season saw Goff put up monster numbers and help get his team to the Super Bowl, which they lost to the Patriots. While Goff has never been the best quarterback in the league like Wentz was in 2017, he’s consistent enough to make them competitive and he’s durable, starting all 16 games the past two seasons.

Wentz, on the other hand, has never been as good as he was in the 2017 season. The Eagles have made it to the playoffs and been competitive, but Wentz has seemed off the entire time. He managed to start all 16 games last season, but a hit by Jadeveon Clowney in the Wild Card game last year really did a number on Wentz and he hasn’t been the same since.

This season, in particular, has been a rough one for the former No. 2 pick, as he has only thrown 16 touchdowns while tossing 15 interceptions. Wentz hasn’t had his healthy weapons or offensive linemen around him, which may have led to his turbulent season, but that didn’t stop Doug Pederson from subbing in Jalen Hurts, who is now starting Week 14 against the Saints.

Meanwhile, Goff is having a standard Goff season and has his Rams in prime position to make the playoffs and maybe even win the toughest division in the NFL. Jared Goff might never be an MVP-type player, but he’s consistent, durable, and when it comes down to it, he’s winning games in Los Angeles.

This is all taking place while Wentz was benched and very well might be on his way out of Philadelphia. Goff doesn’t look to be going anywhere anytime soon, meaning the Rams most definitely made the right pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
