Seeing the Dallas Cowboys take a safety before the sixth-round would probably start a major celebration among the fan base. For years and years, they have been clamoring for help in the back end of the secondary and the front office continues to try and nickel and dime their way through the position.

The result has been porous secondary play and while much of the blame gets thrust on the cornerbacks, they have no faith in the players behind them which leads to some of the issues. And in natural Cowboys fashion, they finally decide to address the position in one of the weakest safety classes in years.

With their first pick in the third round, Dallas picks up Jevon Holland from Oregon. He’s solid in coverage and offers a player who can line up deep at safety and prevent the home runs — something Dallas has done a lot of this season.

Jaylon Smith summed up all the issues with this organization in one conversation recently. When asked if he was upset about their game being moved out of prime time, he simply asked if Jerry Jones was upset. Then said if the owner was good, so was he — which is, of course, paraphrased some.

Smith, who was given a massive extension a season ago has been a major problem for the Cowboys and his attitude seems to be that as long as Jerry is fine with him, so be it. And while Smith has struggled, Jones has done nothing but praise him.

Having said that, the coaching staff has a long time to convince him to add some talent that can challenge Smith to step his game up. That’s what happens here with the selection of Jack Sanborn from Wisconsin.

Sanborn was a big play waiting to happen in 2019 with 80 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and three picks. He gives the Cowboys some much-needed depth and could push the starting linebackers just enough to make a difference.
