Philadelphia Eagles rumors: Carson Wentz wants out if not the starter
Carson Wentz reportedly might want out from the Philadelphia Eagles.
When Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was benched against the Green Bay Packers in favor of rookie second-rounder Jalen Hurts, it, in essence, added a spark to the Eagles offense. None was more apparent than the performance Hurts put on an NFC contender in the New Orleans Saints which resulted in a stunning upset.
However, Wentz doesn’t seem to be pleased with being thrust into a backup role and could want out of Philadelphia if he’s not the starter, via ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Currently, Philadelphia sits at a 4-8-1 record, likely meaning no postseason for the Birds for the first time since Wentz’s rookie season in 2016 when the Eagles finished 7-9.
This undoubtedly is a tough situation for Wentz given what the Eagles did to acquire him in 2016 before ultimately making a heavy investment in him back in June 2019 when he inked a four-year contract to the tune of $128 million. Now, a year after making his money, he could be on his way out.
Carson Wentz put himself in this position not by choice but through his results
It didn’t have to be this way. Just three seasons ago, Wentz found himself with an MVP Caliber season before suffering a knee injury that gave way to Nick Foles and a victory in Super Bowl LII. That all seems too long ago, Since that run, Wentz has not looked like the product from North Dakota State that won multiple championships.
Instead, the former No. 2 overall pick’s on the field play has deteriorated. Throughout this season, Wentz has been sacked 50 times and has thrown 15 interceptions. While much can be attributed to the offensive line being in shambles and the wide receiver core resembling a practice squad, but a heavy investment means heavy demands and when playing in Philadelphia, fan demand can be extremely high.
Furthermore, to trade Wentz would be difficult given his contract and how the upcoming draft class has a plethora of quarterbacks that can be had for a cheaper price. Wentz could have prevented this from occurring and the Eagles could have been a little careful before writing the check. Instead, neither side came through, and thus, the Birds stand where they stand.
