Cleveland Browns playing like contenders at the right time
After handling the Giants, the Cleveland Browns are playing like contenders.
For many fans of the NFL, the Cleveland Browns history only conjures a slew of disheartening and disappointing memories. A 1-15 season in 2016 and then an 0-16 season the following year doesn’t provide hope. However, fast forward to 2020 and suddenly, the fans on Lake Erie see their team beat the Giants 20-6 and improve to 10-4.
Fans are looking forward to the postseason for the first time in almost 20 years but they must wait for further confirmation. But they have locked up their first double-digit win season since 2007.
Their identity is simple. Use the two-headed backfield led by Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, both of whom complement each other with their style of play while creating a level of comfort for Baker Mayfield, who has stepped his game up in his own right from the doldrums he endured last year.
Additionally, the offensive line has vastly improved in both their pass and run blocking which allows them to dictate the game. Defensively, they have the relentless pursuit of the ball which is tantalizing given how the rules in the modern NFL tend to bend in favor of offenses such as the Kansas City Chiefs. Both ingredients are essential to achieving success and establishing the culture brought forth by first-year head coach Kevin Stefanski.
The Cleveland Browns bring hope for the holidays for the first time in so long
In recent seasons, the Browns have been known to pack their bags and prepare their fishing trips. This time, they will be back in the film room preparing through long hours and hard practices. It is highly likely that Cleveland will be in the postseason and thus, the ushering of a new era.
Mayfield is known for performing in big games since his days at Oklahoma. The same can be said for players such as Chubb at Georgia or defensive end Myles Garrett at Texas A&M. Additionally, the drafting from general manager Andrew Berry has provided the Browns with an arsenal that can put up a challenge to any team that runs into Cleveland once the postseason commences.
What they do in the postseason, provided they arrive there, remains to be seen. Like Christmas presents, however, we may have an idea of what it will be but until the wrapping comes off, it is a mystery. What is not a mystery, is that the Cleveland Browns are no longer a doormat, but rather a contender for postseason success in the NFL.
