The Kansas City Chiefs remain in control of the AFC after a hairy victory.
Two seasons ago, the Kansas City Chiefs and the New Orleans Saints were hosting their respective conference championship games with Super Bowl aspirations. Neither managed to make it. Last season, only Kansas City made it to Miami — and, of course, they hoisted the Lombardi Trophy. On Sunday in Week 15, the collision proved to be a thriller as the Chiefs escaped the Big Easy with a 32-29 to stay atop the AFC.
This win is one that a contender can pull out and the Chiefs are certainly that. Furthermore, given how their offense is known for their speed, it was the physicality that they showed against a contender in the NFC that gives them a greater level of respect.
Additionally, credit must be given to the defense, who played with aggression against an offense that was depleted yet flourished given the confines of a home stadium. Now that the Chiefs are perfect on the road this season, they will have two home games to close out the year with the hope being that their next road trip will be to Tampa Bay for Super Bowl LV.
The Kansas City Chiefs have the mental toughness, talent to persevere.
The teams that become the NFL’s greatest have the ability to win in multiple styles rather than one. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid knows about that from being an assistant and then bearing several head coaches himself.
In addition, he has a quarterback with a proven record in Patrick Mahomes. With the Chiefs having invested heavily and looking like their financial decision is paying off, another box of great team status is being checked. Finally, a team that is both mentally and physically tough can be a recipe for success. The Chiefs? They checked that box with their victory.
It could very well have been a Super Bowl LV preview with the Saints and Chiefs. Only, no team will have home-field advantage. Furthermore, if Kansas City can play at the same level or even greater, they will be the ones standing once again as champions.
