2021 NFL Draft: Would Jets or Jaguars be better fit for Trevor Lawrence?
Would Trevor Lawrence be better off landing with the Jets or Jaguars in the 2021 NFL Draft?
There’s no debating that Trevor Lawrence will be the No. 1 overall pick when the 2021 NFL Draft commences in April. We’ve known this about Lawrence since he led the Clemson Tigers to a National Championship as a freshman and, unless he returns to school, he’s going No. 1.
It seemed like a foregone conclusion that the New York Jets would be the lucky winners in the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes. But their win on Sunday now gives the No. 1 pick to the Jaguars. Both teams have just one win apiece but the Jaguars currently hold the top pick because of the strength of schedule tiebreaker.
As of now, Jacksonville would land Lawrence’s services — but is this the best fit for him?
It’s no secret that both the Jets and the Jaguars are terrible. They’ve combined for two wins to this point of the 2020 NFL season and will be the top two picks in the draft for that reason. Each team is getting a quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft but let’s look at what the two are currently working with moving forward.
The Jaguars have a talented running back and decent wide receivers, but that’s about it.
If this result stays the same and Jacksonville drafts Lawrence, he’d have weapons on offense, but would not have protection upfront or a defense to protect his lead. The Jaguars would have a lot of work to do when it came to building around the Clemson product.
As mentioned, though, Lawrence would have a wide array of weapons surrounding him. James Robinson has been a tremendous rookie running back for the Jags while DJ Chark, Keelan Cole, and Laviska Shenault have done a nice job making plays as wide receivers.
Lawrence wouldn’t have to worry about offensive talent in Jacksonville, but protection would be a major issue and that could be detrimental for a young quarterback getting his feet wet in the NFL.
The New York Jets have a better roster, as funny as that is to admit.
Yes, the Jets are a dumpster fire, but their roster really isn’t that bad and would give Lawrence much more room to succeed than that of Jacksonville. In New York, Lawrence would have Jamison Crowder, Denzel Mims and Braxton Berrios at wide receiver and Chris Herndon at tight end. Their offensive line is a work in progress, but we’ve seen good things from first-rounder Mekhi Becton.
Defensively, the Jets are talented and Quinnen Williams is the leader on that side of the ball. The Jets D has limited high-powered offenses like the Rams and Bills (earlier in the season, mind you), so the defense has hope moving forward.
When it comes to which roster would be the better option for Trevor Lawrence, it’s easily the Jets. The organization hopefully would draft more offensive linemen and add another wide receiver as well, then fixate on defense with the rest of the picks.
Lawrence is going to be the quarterback of one of these two teams but he’ll be set up better in New York.
