Immaturity and lousy play may give Washington no choice with Dwayne Haskins.
Upon being drafted out of Ohio State, Washington Football Team quarterback Dwayne Haskins was hailed as a savior of the franchise and the one to lead Washington to glory. Big-time production in the Big Ten and excellent physical skills made him a valuable commodity. However, his time in Washington has likely run its course already.
Following a benching in a Week 16 loss to the Carolina Panthers, it is likely that he will be on his way out of Washington. It’s not just his play however, that can lead to this decision. Earlier this week, Haskins was found on a viral Instagram story portraying him and another woman partying maskless in an apparent strip club.
This came directly after the quarterback played an average game in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Furthermore, following a loss to Baltimore, Haskins was said to have been bragging about his stats, much to the chagrin of his teammates.
Given how things have shaken out in the Washington franchise from the changing of the nickname to the sexual assault scandal with Dan Snyder, Haskins’ acts come across as selfish and immature.
Furthermore, knowing how head coach Ron Rivera recently completed chemotherapy, potential exposure and potential contraction of COVID-19 could be devastating. In other words, Haskins’ acts likely forced him out of Washington.
Dwayne Haskins has no one to blame but himself for his selfish actions.
There’s no need to speculate. On top of this, with Haskins’ poor play against Carolina potentially damaged the hopes of Washington winning a division, that’s just another reason to cut him loose. Next season, it is fair to say Washington will have a new quarterback. As for Haskins, he sealed his own fate.
To say he cannot play in the NFL anymore would be disingenuous. However, given his actions and how his lack of production doesn’t cancel it out, the trust factor is non-existent. His talent warrants him being on a roster, but it will not be in Washington. Alex Smith will likely return as will another quarterback.
Washington invested in Haskins believing that he would be the one that would put them over the top in the NFC East. Instead, he added to the long list of quarterback ineptitude that resides in the history of the nation’s capital. Unlike the majority of those signal-callers, he did it to himself.
