The Washington Football Team will be drafting a quarterback in the first round now that Dwayne Haskins is gone.
Well, the Dwayne Haskins era didn’t go according to plan for the Washington Football Team. He was the No. 15 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and after a turbulent 2020 season (both on and off the field), Haskins has been released. This ensures that the Football Team is going to be looking to add a quarterback in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Washington started to turn the corner this season when Alex Smith was cleared to play and led his team to an upset over the then-undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith was then injured and that paved the way for Haskins to see the field again. Not only has Haskins been inconsistent on the field, but he’s been making waves off of it.
The biggest storyline surrounding Haskins is that he attended his girlfriend’s party and was photographed without a mask on. Not a bright decision for anyone during a pandemic, but especially not for a quarterback of a professional football team.
Dwayne Haskins is out, so who will the Washington Football Team look to add in the draft?
This is where it gets tricky for Washington. Because the NFC East is a dumpster fire, Washington still has a chance to represent the division with a win next week. If they do that, they’d be drafting in the back half of the first round and that’d make it tricky for them when it comes to landing a quarterback in round one.
If the Football Team loses next week, however, that’d put them in the top 15 picks. This would open the door for them to draft someone like Mac Jones of Alabama or Kyle Trask of Florida, both of whom would be decent fits for the organization. This would work out well for Washington too, as Smith could mentor them as he did with Patrick Mahomes during his Kansas City days.
No one can really blame Washington for moving on from Haskins so quickly. Ron Rivera and his staff didn’t draft Haskins and the former Ohio State signal-caller wasn’t doing much for them under center and was causing a stir off the field. Rivera now has a chance to hit the reset button and find a quarterback to be the next face of their franchise.
The only question now is this: Who will it be?
