Deshaun Watson trade landing spot No. 5: New England Patriots

People see this and think “of course” but the Patriots honestly would make a lot of sense for Watson. They’re obviously winners, winning six Super Bowls since the turn of the century, and while 2020 wasn’t great for them, they had a lot of players opt-out, which definitely impacted their chances of being competitive this season.

Bill Belichick would jump at the chance to add Watson to his team, but would Watson want to try and fill Tom Brady’s shoes? We saw how Cam Newton failed to do just that and while Watson is a much better option than 31-year-old Newton, the Patriots fell apart after Brady left. Brady was a big reason for why the franchise was still competitive and it’d put Watson in a similar position to what he’s facing in Houston.

Honestly, the Patriots could have a similar situation to that of the Texans in that they’re rebuilding. They have little to no weapons offensively and their defense is aging. The only reason Watson chooses to go there is if he believes the Patriots can still turn into a dynasty.

This pairing could make sense, but Watson might decide that he doesn’t feel comfortable trying to fill the shoes of one of the game’s greatest quarterbacks.
