The Buffalo Bills made several mistakes but still earned their playoff win in a quarter-century.

Wild Card Weekend in the NFL Playoffs is never short on surprises and excitement. The AFC’s No. 2 seed, the Buffalo Bills, certainly provided plenty of that on Saturday. Hosting the No. 7-seeded Indianapolis Colts, Josh Allen and his cohorts made it look anything but easy in the opening game of the postseason.

In a wild and down-to-the-wire game, Buffalo survived an upset bid with a 27-24 victory and ensured a home playoff game in the Divisional Round. As for the Bills, they now have won a playoff game for the first time since 1995. To look for who was mostly responsible for the victory, look no further than their third-year quarterback, Allen.

Posting 324 yards passing and 54 yards rushing with three total touchdowns makes him the unequivocal Player of the Game. However, he was sacked twice and pressured throughout the game, not looking much like the player in the NFL MVP conversation.

If anything is to be taken from this game, it’s that the Bills have much to fix to contend truly.

The Buffalo Bills have a lot to fix if they’re going to contend for a Super Bowl.

The Colts tend to play hard come postseason time. Under the stewardship of Frank Reich, they play a style of smash-mouth football. That’s a recipe that can lead to success against a team that has relied on the success of a fast-paced offense this season. The plan nearly worked and gave the Bills a scare.

However, close doesn’t cut it in the NFL. It’s wins and losses and, in the end, Buffalo is the one that will have fans rejoicing for another week. They now get to host another playoff game. But with another game in Orchard Park comes some responsibility. If they are to be considered a serious contender, they must clean up their postseason mistakes.

The Buffalo Bills have won a playoff game, the first time that’s happened in a quarter-century; and it’s a cause to celebrate. Their quarterback is, without question, a special talent and a reason why the team is successful. However, in the postseason, it takes balance to succeed and Buffalo will need it if they want their ride to continue to Raymond James Stadium in early February.
