Trading Deshaun Watson would be the dumbest thing the Houston Texans could do this offseason.

Rumors have been swirling about Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson discussing how he might want to be traded this offseason. The Texans cannot, under any circumstance, let this happen.

The one thing that all NFL teams covet is a franchise quarterback who they can rely on for at least the next decade and Houston is fortunate to have that. Yes, their big problem is that they don’t have anything else and that’s why they only won four games this past season. Still, trading Watson would be arguably the dumbest thing any NFL team has ever done.

Even if the Texans were to get a team’s entire draft haul as well as a key player or two, they still don’t have what takes some teams decades to find and that’s a franchise quarterback. Watson needs to be the face of the franchise and if giving him control over big decisions is what needs to be done, then let him help make all of the decisions he wants.

The Houston Texans can’t trade Deshaun Watson.

Watson might want out, but some of this could just be lip service and him trying to negotiate to get a bigger say in what happens within the organization. Reports mentioned that Watson really wanted the team to interview Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy as their next head coach and they haven’t done so. They also hired Nick Caserio as their next general manager without running it by Watson.

The Texans don’t have a draft pick until the third round, but they can make moves this offseason to gain more draft capital. One of the easiest is to trade J.J. Watt, which could merit them a second-round selection. There are definitely ways for Houston to make some noise this offseason and get back in a decent position without shipping their franchise quarterback to a different team.

Some could view this as an opportunity for the Houston Texans to get some draft picks back so they can bolster their roster, but what good does that do when they don’t have a good enough quarterback? If the Texans want to turn things around, they have to hold onto Deshaun Watson, even if he is unhappy right now.
