Indianapolis Colts: 7-Round 2021 NFL mock draft after Wild Card loss
Indianapolis Colts 7-round 2021 NFL mock draft after their playoff loss to the Bills.
The Indianapolis Colts snuck into the 2021 NFL Playoffs thanks to a win in Week 17 over the lowly Jaguars and a loss by the Dolphins. And in the Wild Card Round, they went on the road to Buffalo. While they fought valiantly, Philip Rivers and Co. came up short against the AFC’s No. 2 seed. So now with a playoff exit, the Colts head into the offseason looking to keep improving.
For this team to improve, they need to add depth on both sides of the ball but they also need to have eyes for the future at quarterback. Free agency will be first up in the offseason but the Colts can do some real damage when it comes to the 2021 NFL Draft.
With that in mind, let’s see the haul of prospects the Indianapolis Colts can garner as we dive into a 7-round 2021 NFL mock draft for the franchise. Note: This mock draft was simulated on The Draft Network with trades via TDN Premium (subscription required).
The future of Philip Rivers beyond this season remains to be seen. There has been talk that he could be done after these NFL Playoffs but there is also the chance that the veteran could give it one more go, likely in Indianapolis. In either case, the Colts need a plan for the future.
Jacob Eason likely is not that plan, which means they have to consider using their first-round pick on a player who could be. And with North Dakota State superstar Trey Lance sitting there available when Indianapolis came on the clock, it was an easy choice as they take the dynamic playmaker to be their next franchise quarterback.
As a redshirt freshman, Lance set the FCS world on fire with 28 passing touchdowns and 14 rushing touchdowns while throwing no interceptions, setting an NCAA record with 287 attempts without a pick. He’s young and still developing in terms of his consistent accuracy but he often plays with IQ and skill beyond his years, looking like a man amongst boys in FCS.
Lance will need some development as he makes the steep jump in level of competition. But the Colts are ideally suited to give him that, either with Rivers or even Jacoby Brissett. In any case, he would go into a quarterback-friendly coaching staff that would aid him in the development necessary to maximize his unique talent.
