Jacksonville Jaguars: Urban Meyer expected to be named head coach
All signs point to Urban Meyer taking over as the next Jacksonville Jaguars head coach.
Throughout this offseason, there were days of speculation revolving around whether or not former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer would coach in the NFL. Now the rumors are likely to be a reality. According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Jacksonville Jaguars are in nearing an agreement with the former National Championship winning coach and FOX Sports analyst to be their next head coach.
At first glance, it makes sense. Meyer had a winning record at Ohio State and has dominated at every previous stop at the college level. Furthermore, he won championships at both Florida and Ohio State and a winning culture is needed in Jacksonville.
Additionally, the Jaguars have a large amount of draft capital, including the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, which is likely to be used on Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Moreover, Jacksonville has several young pieces including running back James Robinson and wide receiver D.J. Chark that Meyer can use at his disposal when running his potent offense. They also have a young star in Josh Allen on the defensive side of the ball, meaning there is a bright future.
The Jacksonville Jaguars hiring Urban Meyer has its benefits but also risks.
We can’t forget what took place at Urban Meyer’s previous stops as head coach. In Florida, there were a number of arrests within the program. In Columbus, the domestic violence scandal involving his receivers coach, Zach Smith, left a black eye on his résume and he was suspended for a number of games for it.
Furthermore, it should be noted that he has suddenly left previously citing health reasons. That sort of move may work in college but not with professional athletes who aren’t playing under the rules of amateurism. The consequences are greater at the pro level, to put it plainly.
Urban Meyer can coach football teams and win. There’s no question about it. However, he’s never held this position at the NFL level previously and the responsibility is simply greater. Subsequently, Meyer will have his work cut out for him to find success in his likely new venture in Jacksonville.
