Current Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is reportedly the favorite to be the next head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Los Angeles Chargers search for a head coach has landed on a favorite: Buffalo offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. Though a deal is not yet finalized and likely won’t be until the Bills are eliminated from the 2021 NFL Playoffs, all signs point to Daboll taking over after Anthony Lynn was fired following this season.
Daboll has been an offensive coordinator for the Browns, Dolphins, Chiefs and Alabama Crimson Tide before his stint with Buffalo, which began in 2018. The Bills tasked him with working to develop the offense around young quarterback Josh Allen and the job he’s done in that regard has been phenomenal.
And it’s also a major reason as to why Daboll could be a home-run hire for the Chargers as they look to progress.
Brian Daboll working with Justin Herbert should give the Los Angeles Chargers a ton of hope.
Though it was never the plan for rookie quarterback Justin Herbert to start for as much of the 2020 season as he did, the results from the No. 6 overall pick were phenomenal. He performed at a much higher level than almost anyone expected, even if the Chargers’ success didn’t follow.
Given the rookie season results, Daboll has less development ahead with Herbert than he did with Allen. But one thing the head-coaching frontrunner excelled with in Buffalo was catering the offense to what Allen did well as he developed. Having the opportunity to do that with Herbert and a strong cast of weapons is wholly enticing.
To be sure, Daboll will have his work cut out for him with some areas of the roster. The defense is talented but the right hire for a coordinator on that side of the ball will be key to get the unit to play to their potential. Moreover, reinforcements are badly needed on the offensive line.
Having said that, the future of the Chargers lies with Herbert and what he can do for the offense. Subsequently, hiring Daboll to be their next head coach would be the perfect fit. He’s a proven offensive mind that has worked wonders with the Bills and, with the tools at his disposal in Los Angeles, the future would be quite bright.
