Chicago Bears: 5 Offseason moves that must be made to improve in 2021
Chicago Bears offseason move No. 1: Hit on the next quarterback
This is the most important move of the offseason. Pace has to get this decision. right. Chicago Bears Chairman of the Board George McCaskey said at the end-of-the-season press conference that he still has confidence in Pace to hit on the quarterback.
Why would he have that confidence in Pace? Here is a list of quarterbacks Pace brought in during his tenure in Chicago: Matt Barkley, Brian Hoyer, David Fales, Trubisky, Mike Glennon. Chase Daniel, Tyler Bray and Foles. That is not exactly an impressive crop of quarterbacks.
Yet McCaskey feels that this time he’ll get it right. No one else in Chicago or anywhere else for that matter feels the same.
Not getting the quarterback right really handcuffs a team’s fortune. We see how the Bears are struggling to succeed. The team continued to wait to see if he could flip the switch and put it all together. We’ve seen teams go down for years until they finally cut ties with the quarterback.
For example, look at the Miami Dolphins. They spent six seasons and two contracts asking themselves if Ryan Tannehill was the guy to lead the franchise. In that time, the Dolphins were 42-46. They finally had to cut ties and take another direction.
Cutting ties with Tannehill ended up helping both parties. Once Miami decided to pull the trigger, they went all-in on a rebuild. They traded other players and picked up draft picks. Their rebuild may be ahead of schedule as they finished 10-6 this season. They still failed to make the playoffs but they’re finally on the right track. Tannehill finally put things together and led the Tennessee Titans to a record of 18-8 in his two seasons with two playoff appearances.
We can only hope that Pace is done with Trubisky. If he is trying to save his job now, he has to go out and get a veteran quarterback who can lead the offense. Yes, they still have Foles, but he’s there to be a backup.
There are talks about Chicago making another blockbuster deal like they did to acquire Mack. Pace could make up for his mistake in drafting Trubisky by going after Deshaun Watson, the guy many fans expected back in2017. Until there is word otherwise, however, that is a pipe dream.
The Bears also have to draft their future face of the franchise. If they have a decent starter and Foles as a backup, this prospect can take his time to develop. He won’t have to learn by getting thrown into the fire right away. This way, the veteran could lead an improved Chicago Bears offense and in a couple of seasons, the prospect can step in and succeed himself. That will save a lot of jobs in Chicago.
It’ll be an interesting offseason for the Chicago Bears. Let’s see what a desperate Ryan Pace has up his sleeve. Once he gets his final roster, it’s up to Nagy to do a better job of coaching the team. Then both men could continue their tenures in Chicago.
