Deshaun Watson would turn Jets into immediate Super Bowl contender
Deshaun Watson might be in a new uniform next season and the Jets should make sure it’s theirs as the superstar quarterback continues to be at the center of trade rumors.
It seemed like a certainty that the New York Jets were going to finish the 2020 season as the worst team in the NFL and land Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Unfortunately for them, the Jaguars were also terrible this season and the Jets handed them the top draft spot and the rights to draft Lawrence when they won two games in a row late in the season.
As a result of that, the Jets won’t have Lawrence as their quarterback in 2021 — but maybe that won’t be such a bad thing. With Deshaun Watson wanting out of Houston and setting the stage for a possible blockbuster trade, the Jets need to make sure they voice their interest in the Texans’ quarterback because he’d immediately turn the Jets from a laughing stock into a Super Bowl contender.
The New York Jets need to do whatever they can to get Deshaun Watson on their team.
People made fun of the Jets this past season and, don’t get me wrong, they deserved it. But they’re not the train wreck that many paint them as. The Jets have talented wide receivers, including Jamison Crowder, Denzel Mims and Braxton Berrios. They also have tight end Chris Herndon, who is one of the more promising young tight ends in the league.
New York also drafted Mechi Becton with their first-round pick last year and he played well as a rookie. Getting a solid offensive line would do wonders for the Jets moving forward.
The Jets also hired former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, which has generated a lot of excitement. That being said, the Jets are still rebuilding and if they were to trade a significant amount of draft capital to acquire Watson, it could be a similar situation for him in New York that he was dealing with in Houston as far as surrounding talent and not a lot of pieces to work with to improve.
Still, the Jets already have pieces in place that can help the team win, and adding Watson, who is one of the best players in the league at the most position in sports, would make them go from a joke to a true contender.
The question is: Would Watson actually want to play for the Jets? He’ll have better offers and might want to go somewhere that has a better track record.
