After being released by Washington, Dwayne Haskins has a chance to revive his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, signing with his new team on Thursday.

There was a time where quarterback Dwayne Haskins was on top of the football world as the Washington Football Team’s first-round pick. Unfortunately, he blew that opportunity with selfishness and poor play. Thus, he was released and without a job.

On Thursday, however, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported that the former Buckeye would be given a second chance in the NFL after signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Haskins getting a second chance is far from surprising. Given his first-round pedigree and the opportunity to learn from his mistakes, it could be a savvy move. Additionally, he has new teammates and a culture in Pittsburgh that can help revive his career.

Mike Tomlin loves his players and gives them freedom. However, he does have a rule about disrespect and is not afraid to send players away, such as Antonio Brown. He potentially offers the proper culture for Haskins to find his NFL footing.

Dwayne Haskins must take full advantage of the opportunity provided by the Steelers.

There is no other way around it, Dwayne Haskins must earn his place on a team. Normally, a first-rounder is given preferential leverage but Haskins does not have such leverage strictly based on his off the field behavior. On the field, he had moments that warranted him being given another chance. Thus, the Pittsburgh Steelers took a flier on him and he is now in the Steel City.

Given Ben Roethlisberger‘s situation and the aging of several other players combined with the expected drop in the salary cap, it was wise to find a quarterback in Pittsburgh. They found one, though he comes with a long list of reasons to be cautious.

Regardless, with the situation Haskins joins in Pittsburgh, specifically at quarterback, and with likely little room for error on his part, let’s hope the youngster can take advantage of the opportunity being presented to him.
