The Indianapolis Colts will find themselves searching for a quarterback once again. Who will be their starter in 2021?

Philip Rivers announced his retirement from the NFL and, while the Indianapolis Colts might not have re-signed him anyway, now they’ll for sure have a new quarterback in 2021. A franchise that once had the same quarterback from 1998-2011 and then landed Andrew Luck for the next seven years finds themselves once again looking for a signal-caller.

The Colts have a few different directions they could go in this offseason. They could sign a quarterback in free agency, they could trade for a quarterback, or they could draft their next franchise quarterback. There are decent options at every potential route, but which direction will Indianapolis go in?

Let’s take a look at the best names for Indy to sign at quarterback.

Indianapolis Colts QB option No. 7: Dak Prescott

This would certainly be a fun fit for both sides, but it just doesn’t seem all that likely honestly. The Cowboys haven’t been great when it comes to Dak Prescott’s contract, but there are perks of being the quarterback of the Cowboys and when push comes to shove, it really does feel like Prescott will be back in Dallas in 2021 and beyond.

This is fun to think about though because Prescott would play behind a tremendous offensive line (which he did in his early seasons in Dallas) and while his weapons wouldn’t be as good, they’d still be respectable. He’d also have a much better defense so the games wouldn’t be put on his shoulders every week.

The Colts would have to shell out a lot of money to sign Prescott away from the Cowboys and while he’d definitely make them THE team in the AFC South, this scenario doesn’t seem all that likely.

Indianapolis Colts QB option No. 6: Jimmy Garoppolo

This would obviously depend on how attached the 49ers are to Jimmy Garoppolo. Would the Niners go all in and trade for Deshaun Watson? If so, Garoppolo would most definitely be on the trade block.

Garoppolo is an interesting quarterback because, on the one hand, he’s been to three total Super Bowls (granted he was a backup in two of them) and played really well in 2019 when he led the Niners to the big game. On the other hand, Garoppolo has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career and he’s not even 30 yet. That’s not promising.

The Colts have one of the best offensive lines in the league and plenty of talent, but this is a team that needs a quarterback who can win them games. While Garoppolo was pretty good in 2019, he couldn’t make the plays that needed to be made in the Super Bowl and that’s why he’s even in consideration to be traded in the first place.
