New Orleans Saints aren’t in desirable position moving forward

The New Orleans Saints are in for a rough offseason after losing in the NFC Divisional Round.

Drew Brees‘ career has come to an end and with that, so has the greatest era in the history of the New Orleans Saints. For the first time since Brees came to New Orleans in 2006, the Saints are in the market for a quarterback.

Sean Payton seems to be married to the idea of Taysom Hill quarterbacking the Saints in 2021 and that might have to be what happens in the Big Easy, as the Saints don’t have any money to work with this offseason. New Orleans is projected to be $100 million over the salary cap this offseason and that’s going to result in them having to cut costs where they can.

That means that not only do the Saints not have a legitimate quarterback option moving forward, but they don’t have the draft capital or the money to really bring in anyone. Hill will be back in 2021 and the Saints could likely make something work with Jameis Winston if they wanted to try to run with those two, but what happens with the rest of the roster?

The Saints gave extensions to Demario Davis and Alvin Kamara prior to the 2020 season and while those two players are incredible, it’s made their cap situation an undesirable one. The Saints could opt to trade Michael Thomas, who was injured throughout most of the 2020 season, but they might not get much in return considering his injury history.

The Saints are in a tough spot and it’ll be interesting to see how they handle their predicament this offseason.

The biggest thing the Saints need to figure out this offseason is who they want to be their quarterback in 2021 and beyond. As mentioned before, they have Hill and could probably re-sign Winston, but maybe they fall in love with someone in the draft and decide to trade up. That’d make their situation trickier moving forward, but it’s something Payton and the Saints will deal with when that time comes.

The Saints went all in these past few seasons because they believed they had a good enough roster to win a Super Bowl. That obviously didn’t come to fruition and now Brees is on his way out and the Saints have an uphill battle ahead of them.

Fortunately, Payton is one of the best head coaches in the league and he’ll be able to make it work with Hill and Winston if that’s what New Orleans decides to do. For Saints fans, however, it could be a rough couple of years.
