The Patrick Mahomes injury saga has been ongoing throughout the week but the Friday update has the Chiefs quarterback in line to play in the AFC Championship Game vs. Buffalo.

Even with how great of a head coach Andy Reid has been, Kansas City Chiefs fans had to be concerned during the Divisional Round when all-world quarterback Patrick Mahomes was forced to the locker room with a concussion. The Mahomes injury cast doubt over their chances but, alas, they prevailed over the Browns.

However, the uncertainty around Mahomes’ injury status leading into the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills still left Chiefs fans sitting on bated breath. After all, he not only had to clear concussion protocol but was also dealing with a toe injury.

After being limited in practice earlier in the week, though, Mahomes gave a positive update on his health on Friday. In regards to his concussion, the 2018 NFL MVP and Super Bowl LIV MVP said that he had cleared protocol:

That was the biggest hurdle for the quarterback playing against the Bills and, after that, there’s no question he’d play through anything else going on. But in regards to the toe, Mahomes said that it was getting better with each passing day as well.

Patrick Mahomes playing in the AFC Championship Game is better for everyone.

While the Bills and their fans may disagree as they have eyes to get back to the Super Bowl, the truth of the matter is that no one wants to see the AFC Championship Game be played without Patrick Mahomes under center for the Chiefs.

Chad Henne stepped in against Cleveland and delivered an unforgettable performance, both good (the final two plays) and bad (an arm-punt interception on a horrible play). However, there was little chance that, even with Kansas City’s weapons and playing at home, that he’d be able to match Josh Allen and the Bills offense blow-for-blow.

With Mahomes on the field, we get two of the league’s brightest young stars duking it out with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. And the fact that the Chiefs quarterback is trending towards full health with his toe injury only makes that even more fun. At the end of the day, NFL fans should be thankful that Mahomes will be on the field at Arrowhead on Sunday.
