Green Bay Packers: 5 Offseason moves to get Aaron Rodgers to the Super Bowl
3. Keep key free agents on the Green Bay Packers
One of the big storylines for the Packers this offseason is going to be the decisions they have to make about retaining their own players. As mentioned, King will be a free agent in the 2021 offseason but there are a number of other key contributors on both sides of the ball who are set to hit the market in some capacity this offseason.
Running back Aaron Jones is likely the biggest name but there have been signs that Green Bay plans to let him walk. We’ve seen how slippery of a slope paying running backs a massive extension in the modern NFL can be and, with the team drafting AJ Dillon in the second round last offseason, it’s not hard to imagine them avoiding Jones’ big payday.
Having said that, the Packers will have to look at center Corey Linsley, another key running back in Jamaal Williams and even players like Lane Taylor in unrestricted free agency. Meanwhile, breakout tight end Robert Tonyan will be a restricted free agent, as will defensive tackle Tyler Lancaster. And wide receiver Allen Lazard is an early rights free agent as well.
With the salary cap slimming to some degree in the 2021 offseason, the Packers will have to be wise with how they re-sign these players. Linsley should be a priority as a stalwart on the interior offensive line and keeping Williams and Tonyan would be huge for offensive consistency. In any case, though, they can’t be looking to fill too many holes on the roster by not retaining some of their own in free agency.
