Green Bay Packers: 5 Offseason moves to get Aaron Rodgers to the Super Bowl
2. Continue beefing up linebacker group
Linebacker was an area of concern for the Green Bay Packers by many accounts coming into the year. They signed free agent Christian Kirksey to try and shore up the position and, when healthy, he played relatively well. But health has been an issue for the veteran over recent years and that trend remained true in the 2020 season.
However, the Packers did see some key contributors step up unexpectedly. Rookie Krys Barnes entered the fray and was one of the breakout stars for the defense this year. Meanwhile, another rookie in Kamal Martin also proved his merit throughout the year. Having both of those players garner experience and improve is critical for the defense getting better moving forward.
Having said that, the work shouldn’t stop there for the Packers at linebacker. While the run defense improved throughout the year, the truth of the matter is that Green Bay is still susceptible in that capacity. That requires more attention at linebacker either through free agency or the draft.
While I wouldn’t consider it a top-tier need, especially in the draft, the franchise proved capable of finding value at the position in this past year’s class. Subsequently, they should look to spend a mid-round pick and perhaps pick up another veteran on a cheap contract to further strengthen and deepen the position.
