Asante Samuel Jr. 2. player. 804. Scouting Report. Florida State. Pick Analysis. Cornerback

In the event that the Broncos don’t take a quarterback in Round 1, they’ll likely take a cornerback as they’re in dire need of one. But with Lance going at No. 9, that’s the obvious focus here. Denver tried to address the position last offseason with Ojemudia, Bouye and Essang Bassey but no player made a big difference. Moreover, their depth could be tested with free agency losses.

While teams love outside cornerbacks to have length, Asante Samuel Jr. may buck the trend. The sone of a former star NFL corner, the Florida State product measures in at 5-10, 185 pounds. What he lacks in size, though, he makes up for in skill.

Samuel shines in man coverage as he can showcase his quick feet, smooth hips and ability to match routes. Despite his size limitations, he’s not a liability in the run game and is a competitor. He does struggle in zone coverage and, at times, with his ball skills. Those are areas to work on but he’s a great fit under Vic Fangio and his versatility will be well received.

Other Players Considered: Eric Stokes, Tyson Campbell, Trey Smith

player. 817. Scouting Report. LSU. Pick Analysis. Linebacker. Jabril Cox. 3

As Josey Jewell and Alexander Johnson are Denver’s primary linebackers right now, it’s an obvious need for the franchise. Both players are quality run defenders but struggle in coverage. Jabril Cox could help with that by joining the Broncos.

Cox played for the LSU Tigers in 2020 after a stint at NDSU. Like his former teammate and the No. 9 pick in this mock draft, Lance, Cox is a toolsy player. He’s athletic, explosive and has the traits to even play one-on-one man coverage against slot receivers. Of course, his tools require refinement as he needs to be less reactionary and become a surer tackle.

Regardless, he would give the Broncos a skill set at linebacker they don’t currently have. He will require some time and attention from coaches and fans but his upside is evident.

Other Players Considered: Cameron McGrone, Javonte Williams, Rodarius Williams
