Detroit Lions: 5 Quarterbacks who could replace Matthew Stafford
Detroit Lions QB target No. 1: Zach Wilson
Once again barring that the Lions would be able to trade Stafford for a pick that could land them either Lawrence or Fields, their best option in the 2021 NFL Draft and overall to replace their longtime quarterback is BYU’s Zach Wilson. He was one of the biggest risers of the 2020 college season and his upside appears enormous.
Wilson showed enormous progression from his 2019 to 2020 season with the Cougars, particularly as a passer. He’d already earned the reputation as a creative player capable of using his athleticism and legs to extend and make plays prior to this past season but he took great strides with his arm to become a bonafide playmaker throwing to all levels of the field.
It’s clear on film that Wilson simply has a natural feel for the quarterback position in all facets. Whether he’s stable in the pocket or avoiding a pass rush, he has a terrific sense of where his receivers will be open while also possessing the arm talent to make the throw into the perfect spots for his guys.
At least substantially more so than Lance, Wilson has shown the tools to be a day one starter for the Detroit Lions if he falls to them at No. 7. And as the franchise brings in a new head coach and staff and largely hits the reset button as they move on from Stafford, the BYU product is someone they could feel confident handing the keys to for the long haul.
