New England Patriots perfect draft fit No. 2: Khyiris Tonga, DL, BYU

Having a weak run defense hurt the Patriots in the worse way. They gave up an average of 164-yards on the ground in three of their last four games. They went 0-3 before an easy week 17 victory against the Jets. Fixing the leaky run defense is necessary for the Pats to return to AFC East prominence. Free agency could help, but bringing in a powerful you tackle will as well.

The 2021 NFL Draft class doesn’t have a ton of depth at the defensive tackle position. However, there are some gems ideally suited for Bill Belichick’s defense. BYU defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga is a perfect fit, literally.

The 6-4, 321-pound tackle has a massive frame, ideally suited for the 0-technique. He’s so big The Draft Network’s Benjamin Solak described him as a “humongous human being.”

Tonga’s length allows him to stay clean and control the interior lineman. Thanks to his lockout ability and length he can line up at the five-technique as well. Although he’s tall, he does have an understanding of leverage. His quick step and powerful strike aids in his ability to win at the point of attack.

The senior lineman offers plus ability as a power rusher, but he’ll make his money as a two-down lineman. He could work in rotation as a rookie giving the Pats the much-needed power upfront.
