Super Bowl: Power rankings for 4 previous Big Games in Tampa
1. Pittsburgh Steelers 27, Arizona Cardinals 23 (Super Bowl XLIII)
It was a game that featured one of the most spectacular defensive plays in NFL history as well as one of the great catches in the annals of the Super Bowl. And there was a tremendous comeback that fell just short thanks to a magnificent fourth-quarter drive that enabled the Pittsburgh Steelers to become the first franchise to win six Super Bowls.
For nearly three quarters, Mike Tomlin’s team appeared to be in control. The team owned a 20-7 lead late in the third quarter (spurred by James Harrison’s 100-yard interception return on the final play of the first half) before the Arizona Cardinals responded with 16 consecutive points.
The team’s two touchdowns came via passes from Kurt Warner to Larry Fitzgerald, which sandwiched a safety when Steelers’ center Justin Hartwig was flagged for holding in the end zone. Fitzgerald’s second score came with 2:37 to play on a catch-and-run that covered 64 yards.
Then it was Ben Roethlisberger’s turn and as had been the case most of the day, his favorite target was wide receiver Santonio Holmes. The game’s MVP finished with nine receptions for 131 yards and one score. That touchdown came with 35 seconds to play and the third-year performer made a grab for the ages, getting his toes down in the right corner of the end zone. A LaMarr Woodley sack of Warner forced a fumble and the Steelers held on to win.
