Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator candidate No. 3: Kris Richard

It’s been noted by several people that Dan Quinn likely would’ve been an ideal candidate for the Packers. The former Seahawks defensive coordinator and Falcons head coach worked with LaFleur previously and the current Green Bay head coach has spoken about his admiration of Quinn. Unfortunately, Quinn was hired by the Dallas Cowboys to be their new DC.

But if the Packers don’t have a shot at Quinn, they could potentially get the next best thing in Kris Richard. Richard worked closely with Quinn in Seattle and has a similar background as a result of that. He’s spent time at various defenses in the league, largely working with defensive backs. And outside of a poor situation in Dallas, he’s succeeded everywhere he’s been.

Richard took the 2020 season off as he was aiming for a defensive coordinator job and didn’t get one. If he’s now looking to get back into the league, though, the Packers would make a ton of sense. He would have a strong secondary core to work with and would give LaFleur the Quinn-esque defense that he likely desires.

While there is a risk in hiring a defensive coordinator with no experience at the position or with the team, if Richard is willing, there are mechanics in place that would make him a solid fit in Green Bay.
