The 49ers missed out on Matthew Stafford to their division rival and now they’re going to be forced to make a big trade.

The San Francisco 49ers have been linked to a few different quarterbacks over the past few weeks, but one they won’t be landing is Matthew Stafford, who is now a member of the Rams. This was a big trade for the Rams and made them the favorites to win the NFC West in 2021.

The Niners are looking to rebound after a down season where their team was plagued by injuries and a lot of the buzz surrounding them this offseason has been tying them to other quarterbacks. Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury history continues to rear its ugly head, so it makes sense that San Francisco would be looking to move on from him.

The biggest and best name the 49ers could get would definitely be Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is unhappy with his current situation, to say the least. The 49ers would be one of the few teams who, if they did indeed acquire Watson, would be immediate Super Bowl contenders and ready to win right away.

The 49ers need to match what the Rams did and find themselves a quarterback.

While Garoppolo was just one throw away from winning Super Bowl LIV, the fact of the matter is that he didn’t get the job done. Teams aren’t being patient with quarterbacks like they used to and despite getting to a Super Bowl, the Niners might not be content with Jimmy G, especially with his injury history.

Trading for Watson would not only make the 49ers a better team than the Rams, but it’d also make them the favorites in the NFC. They’d have one of the most promising young quarterbacks in the league and a stacked offense around him.

Whether or not the trade by the Rams pushes San Francisco to make some kind of swanky deal is unknown, but it should be motivation for them. Maybe they don’t go after Watson, but instead attempt to bring in Carson Wentz or Sam Darnold, two younger options who they’d have for hopefully the next decade.

Teams need a great quarterback to win titles and while the 49ers have gotten to the Super Bowl with Garoppolo, the defense and the run game were mostly to thank there and when it came down to him airing it out, he couldn’t get it done. That might be enough for the Niners to make a big move and one-up the Rams.
