The Chicago Bears need depth at the safety spot. Tashaun Gipson might re-sign to be the starter at strong safety but the Bears need help behind him and Eddie Jackson.

The LSU Tigers is a factory for defensive secondary players. JaCoby Stevens is the latest. He can come in and provide good play in a backup position right away.

Stevens played both receiver and safety when he came to college. He concentrated solely on defense in his sophomore season. At 6-0, 216 pounds he has great size for his position.

Stevens plays better closer to the line of scrimmage where he can play aggressively in a shorter area. He crowds routes and does a good job of redirecting them.

Stevens can be useful in short-yardage situations. He can also play nickel linebacker. Additionally, he played on special teams and can play an integral part in that unit.

LSU listed Stevens as weighing 228 pounds but he weighed 216 pounds at the Senior Bowl. Scouts wonder if he actually played at 228 it affected his athleticism and speed. If that is so, then coming down to 216 helps him in those areas. The Tigers used him all over the field but his deficiencies in those areas hurt him. If the drop in weight does help him play better then he could be a big pickup.
