Super Bowl 55: Ranking the 10 best MVP candidates in Chiefs vs. Buccaneers
Super Bowl 55 MVP candidate No. 6: Shaquil Barrett, EDGE, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
One of the biggest storylines to watch coming into Super Bowl LV is the state of the Chiefs offensive line. With Eric Fisher suffering an Achilles injury two weeks ago, the reigning champions are without several key starters up front, something that a stout Tampa defensive line should be chomping at the bit to take advantage of. That’s especially true with Shaquil Barrett, especially after what he did to Green Bay.
Against another offensive line that was working at less than 100 percent capacity in the Packers, Barrett racked up a monster three-sack game. He’s the type of tone-setting pass-rusher who is capable of getting pressure and making plays. If he can do that in this situation and either bring down Mahomes or force turnovers, he could forge a path to winning MVP.
Super Bowl 55 MVP candidate No. 5: Mike Evans, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
In the regular-season meeting between the Chiefs and Buccaneers, Mike Evans actually only had three receptions despite being targeted nine times. However, two of those grabs went for touchdown. He, like Godwin has seen sporadic production throughout the season, including notching just one catch against the Saints in the Divisional Round.
But what has stayed consistent is that Brady looks for the massive wideout in the red zone. He’s the perfect target for when the Bucs get in close given his frame and ability to win in contested situations. That shouldn’t change in this game and we should expect to see him get his opportunity to put up points. If he puts up enough, he could be an undeniable candidate for the award.
