Super Bowl 2021 bold predictions: Tyreek Hill breaks records, Tom Brady adds to legacy
Predictions for the 2021 Super Bowl 55 as the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers face off in a potential shootout on Sunday, Feb. 7.
If you’re looking for storylines in the 2021 Super Bowl, then you don’t have to look far. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to begin a dynasty by winning their second straight championship. To do so, however, they must take down the most dominant Super Bowl-winning quarterback in NFL history, Tom Brady, in his first season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It’s going to be electric at Super Bowl LV, especially with how well these teams have played this season. To put it in the simplest terms, many people are predicting the Chiefs and Buccaneers to deliver one of the most entertaining championship games in recent memory — which is saying a lot.
So we’re steering right into that with our 2021 Super Bowl bold predictions. We’ve got 10 of them as we are ready to see some madness on Sunday, Feb. 7 at Raymond James Stadium. Note: All records and stats are via Pro Football Reference unless otherwise noted.
Super Bowl bold prediction No. 10: Mahomes, Hill break longest passing TD record
The current record for the longest touchdown pass in the Big Game is actually quite surprising, not because of the length but due to who completed it. In the Carolina Panthers’ Super Bowl XXVIII loss to the New England Patriots, Jake Delhomme completed an 85-yard score to Mushin Muhammad. That record is set to fall on Sunday, though.
After Tyreek Hill burned the Buccaneers for over 200 yards in the first quarter of their Week 12 matchup, you have to believe Tampa Bay will be keyed in on the blazing wideout. But I’m not convinced that totally matters. It won’t be a big bomb down the field but, after getting backed up inside the 10-yard line, Mahomes will find Hill on a quick slant and he’ll take it to the house for a record-setting touchdown.
Super Bowl bold prediction No. 9: Shaquil Barrett racks up 3 sacks
It can’t be understated that the Chiefs are coming into this game with an offensive line that is substantially less than 100 percent. Eric Fisher was lost with an Achilles injury suffered in the AFC Championship Game, meaning they’ll be without either starting tackle and with two backup guards as well. The Buccaneers defensive line will look to take advantage of that, Shaquil Barrett in particular.
Barrett racked up 3.0 sacks against the Packers in the NFC Championship Game in a similar situation and we should expect more of the same. Only six players in NFL history have ever recorded 3.0 or more sacks in the BIg Game but Barrett will add his name to that list. Yes, Mahomes is mobile but that can’t eliminate every bit of pressure and we’ll see that play out.
