Power ranking Tom Brady’s 9 previous Super Bowl appearances
2. New England Patriots 32, Carolina Panthers 29 (Super Bowl XXXVIII)
For the second time in three years, kicker Adam Vinatieri would provide the game-winning points. And versatile linebacker Mike Vrabel did it on defense and offense in this entertaining game. But it was quarterback Tom Brady who came up throughout the day at Houston.
In contrast to his first Super Bowl appearance two years earlier when he threw for less than 200 yards, the emerging performer hit on 66.7 percent of his passes vs. the Carolina Panthers. He was picked once but wasn’t sacked. Brady finished with 354 yards through the air and three scores to Deion Branch, David Givens and the aforementioned Vrabel — earning game MVP honors for the second time.
1. New England Patriots 34, Atlanta Falcons 28 (OT) (Super Bowl LI)
The third-quarter score of Super Bowl LI has taken on a life of its own. Atlanta Falcons 28, New England Patriots 3. But as NFL fans know by now and many are reminded on a yearly basis on March 28, Bill Belichick’s club rallied from 25 points down and scored the final 31 points of the game — the last six in overtime — to win the franchise’s fourth Super Bowl title.
Tom Brady finished with 466 yards through the air. His touchdown tosses to James White and Danny Amendola both came during the second-half rally. Brady overcame five sacks and an 82-yard pick six to pull off the biggest comeback ever on Super Sunday. And he got some help from sure-handed Julian Edelman.
