After releasing J.J. Watt, the Houston Texans are headed for a rough stretch, especially with Deshaun Watson trade rumors continuing to swirl.

When a player like J.J. Watt is a face of a franchise, the idea of that player leaving the organization via trade or release is devastating. On Friday, it was official that the former three-time Defensive Player of the Year would be released after 10 seasons with the Houston Texans.

This move highlights that there is indeed a problem in Houston. Furthermore, if the Texans are willing to part ways with Watt, what’s to say they don’t end up losing Deshaun Watson, who’s made it abundantly clear that he wants out.

Watt was undoubtedly unhappy with how the franchise has operated towards a number of its better players, none more apparent than DeAndre Hopkins, who continues to perform admirably for Arizona without the cloud of uncertainty that currently descends upon the Texans organization.

J.J. Watt gave it all to the Houston Texans, but it was never enough to overcome his situation.

It’s never easy to lose a transcendent player. Just ask the Patriots and their situation with Tom Brady or the 49ers parting ways with Joe Montana. J.J. Watt was the face of the Texans franchise and an icon in the city.

Hurricane Harvey devastated that region, and Watt stepped to the forefront and raised so much money to help the city recover. His kind generosity was replicated by his style of play on the football field, a vicious and talented player who proved that he should have never been booed on draft day.

Watt deserves a championship or even a chance to compete for a title. Now he has that chance to choose his next stop. Maybe it’s in Pittsburgh with his brothers or another team that he can contend with. One thing remains factual; the Houston Texans failed him and there is heavy turmoil ahead, especially if Watson is gone as well.
