Russell Wilson trade: 5 NFL teams that should be calling Seahawks
A Russell Wilson trade would undoubtedly turn the NFL on its head but which NFL teams should be calling the Seahawks to try and make a deal?
It’s already abundantly clear that the 2021 NFL offseason is going to consist of unprecedented quarterback movement. Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff are already on the move and the likes of Deshaun Watson, Jimmy Garoppolo and many others could follow. But the true shocker would be if Russell Wilson joined that group of signal-callers to be traded this offseason.
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora floated the notion of the Seahawks trading their star quarterback as he’s recently voiced his frustrations with the roster-building in Seattle. As such, there have reportedly been teams calling about Wilson, though with no luck.
Having said that, if there is any type of uncertainty about Wilson’s future in Seattle and a team is willing to give up a monstrous haul of draft picks and players, it’s not inconceivable that the quarterback could be traded. So which teams could be in line to make that type of deal and should be on the phone with the Seahawks?
With all due respect to teams like the Chicago Bears, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins and even the Dallas Cowboys, they don’t make the list of the top five destinations. Instead, it’s the following teams that would be the best landing spots for a Russell Wilson trade.
Russell Wilson trade landing spot No. 5: New England Patriots
It’s no secret that the New England Patriots were unable to solidify anything about the future of the quarterback position after the 2020 season. With the departure of Tom Brady in free agency, they looked for Cam Newton to be a stopgap option. After some brief glimmers of hope, that turned out to be a fruitless endeavor.
However, with Bill Belichick still patrolling the sidelines and the defense still constructed to compete at the highest levels of the NFL, the Patriots have every reason to be interested in finding a winning formula under center. And as things currently stand, that does not include young Jarrett Stidham.
Russell Wilson, on the other hand, would be an ideal fit. One of the reasons many were bullish on Newton in New England was the desire of Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to work with a mobile quarterback. Wilson would check that box but would also provide them with a capable passer.
If the franchise is interested in getting back to a Super Bowl level in the post-Brady era, then they should be willing to kick the tires on a Wilson trade and should be on the horn with the Seahawks seeing what kind of deal would be on the table.
