Russell Wilson trade: 5 NFL teams that should be calling Seahawks
Russell Wilson trade landing spot No. 2: Indianapolis Colts
The abrupt retirement of Andrew Luck put the Indianapolis Colts in an extremely tough spot at quarterback moving forward. Yes, they have a deep quarterback room that allowed them to start Jacoby Brissett for a year and find moderate success. And they also signed Philip Rivers for a year before he retired after the 2020 campaign.
With Rivers now gone, though, their best option on the roster is Brissett — unless they feel confident in 2020 fourth-round pick Jacob Eason, which is hard to imagine at this point. And it’s also hard to think they’re gung-ho to hand the keys back over to Brissett considering that they went after and signed Rivers at the late stages of his career.
Much like the Saints, though, the Colts have a roster that is built to win and compete for titles. The offensive line is one of the best in the league (music to Wilson’s ears), the defense has become a dominant force, and there are clear avenues to upgrade the weaponry on offense, which might be the only concern.
The only reason that the Colts wouldn’t be calling the Seahawks about a Russell Wilson trade would be the simple fact that general manager Chris Ballard is not one to often be that aggressive or fork over a ton of draft capital. But if it meant getting Wilson, my guess is that he’d be more than willing to make an exception.
