The Dallas Cowboys swung and missed on several free agents in 2020 but that doesn’t mean they should give up, instead, they need to add better fits

Last season, the Dallas Cowboys made a few moves in free agency and at first, it seemed as though they were finally going to begin to fix their defense. Unfortunately, none of the moves they made panned out as expected.

Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy never played a down due to injury and safety HaHa Clinton-Dix was released before the season began. Then there was Dontari Poe, who hardly made a sound for seven games before being released.

So naturally, this means the team’s front office will likely return to their overly-frugal ways, which is the wrong response. They might have swung and missed in 2020 but there are still players available in 2021 who could help — as long as they don’t make a mistake by trying to avoid free agency altogether.

With that said, here are four players who can fix the defensive side of the ball for Dallas if they add them in 2021 free agency.

4. Patrick Peterson, Cornerback

This won’t be the first time the Cowboys and Patrick Peterson have been mentioned in the same breath and it’s probably time to make a union between the two sides happen. Of course, there will be the argument that Peterson’s best days are behind him and they shouldn’t sign a cornerback set to turn 32 this offseason.

However, the same was said last year about Xavier Rhodes, who ended up with the Indianapolis Colts. Rhodes not only played well for the Colts but he helped their defense round into a solid unit. He didn’t do it alone but his play was instrumental to their success in 2020.

Dallas currently has a young secondary, and it could get even younger if Chidobe Awuzie were to leave in free agency. Adding Peterson would give them a veteran to help guide them in 2021 which would pay dividends beyond his time in Big D.
