Chicago Bears should consider Alex Smith trade after missing on Wentz
If the Chicago Bears want to find a quarterback who can win games, they should trade for Alex Smith after missing out on Carson Wentz.
With Matthew Stafford and Carson Wentz traded to new teams, the Chicago Bears are still without a decent quarterback option for 2021. Maybe they re-sign Mitchell Trubisky for one more year or maybe they try to find his successor in the draft, but if the Bears want to unseat the Packers in the NFC North, they’re going to have to be more aggressive in the quarterback department.
One option that hasn’t been discussed much is trading for Washington quarterback Alex Smith. This might seem like an odd pick due to Smith’s nasty injury a few years ago, but we saw this past season that he’s still a very good quarterback and capable of winning games.
With Washington keeping Taylor Heinicke — who actually played quite well in the postseason — perhaps it’s time to consider moving on from Smith and the just shy of $19 million he’s set to make in 2021. Smith still has two years left on his contract and is a winner.
Alex Smith would do well with the Chicago Bears.
During Smith’s best season as the Chiefs’ quarterback in 2017, his offensive coordinator was Matt Nagy, who is the head coach in Chicago now. Nagy needs a spark to keep his job past 2021 and while Smith might not be the most exciting name out there, he’s a good quarterback who could win them games these next two years and make them more competitive.
The Bears have a very good defense and do have a fair share of talented weapons on offense too. It’s been hard to see some of those weapons shine due to the quarterback carousel that’s taken place in the Windy City, but that wouldn’t be as big of an issue with Smith in town.
Chicago might be waiting around to see what it’s going to take to acquire Deshaun Watson (if he truly is made available) but if Washington is open to trading Smith (and it’d make sense too sooner rather than later), the Bears should pick up the phone and offer a decent package for him.
It might not make them a Super Bowl contender, but Alex Smith as the Chicago Bears’ quarterback would at least close the gap between them and the Packers.
