Trey Lance. player. Pick Analysis. QB. North Dakota State. 42. Scouting Report. 12

While they haven’t moved on from Jimmy Garoppolo just yet, all the whispers that it’s going to happen aren’t a great sign for his future in San Fran. Garappolo has proven that he can win for the Niners and is a good fit in the Kyle Shanahan offense. No, he isn’t exactly a superstar but he did enough to get them to the Super Bowl.

The problem is, he’s struggling to stay healthy. Far too often, the 49ers have to turn to Nick Mullens or C.J. Beathard and they can’t keep doing this while hoping to remain competitive in the NFC West. They have to get some stability under center and that’s why they pull the trigger on Trey Lance here.

Lance is an interesting prospect since he put up some insane numbers for North Dakota State. In fact, he had only one interception his whole career which is absurd. The problem is, he hasn’t played against elite competition, and this season we only got to see him in one game due to their league’s shortened season.

Having said all that, he could become a top-tier quarterback, and as tiring as it is to hear how Kyle Shanahan can make any quarterback work (and no, that doesn’t mean Josh Rosen will suddenly be worth a darn in Frisco) he actually could be a great coach for Lance.
