Jacksonville Jaguars should bring Alex Smith in to mentor Trevor Lawrence
The Jacksonville Jaguars have the No. 1 pick, meaning Trevor Lawrence is as good as theirs. Now, it’s time to find him a mentor and the best possible option is Alex Smith.
After winning their first game of the season, the Jacksonville Jaguars wouldn’t record another W for the rest of the 2020 season, ending with a 1-15 record and ensuring the No. 1 overall pick and the rights to selecting Trevor Lawrence in the 2021 NFL Draft.
The Jaguars will have their franchise quarterback, but they need to make sure Lawrence has a good NFL mentor and there isn’t a better option in that department than Alex Smith, currently with the Washington Football Team.
Bucky Brooks was the first to bring up this idea, noting that Smith has a previous relationship with both Urban Meyer and Trent Baalke. He’s also likely on his way out of Washington, as they re-signed Taylor Heinicke and will probably look to draft a quarterback themselves.
The Jacksonville Jaguars need to give Trevor Lawrence all of the help he can get.
This wouldn’t be the first time that Alex Smith served as a mentor for a young quarterback. The 49ers drafted Colin Kaepernick in the second round back in 2011 and he ended up unseating Smith just a year later. Smith then went to Kansas City where he started for four seasons before the team traded up to draft Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes strolled the sidelines for his rookie season while learning from Smith and as Chiefs fans learned, it worked. Smith’s injury looked like the end of his career, but he came back and kicked butt in 2020 and if he does decide he wants to keep playing, the Jaguars could give him a nice final destination in his career.
Lawrence probably starts from day one in Jacksonville, but as we saw with the Chiefs and Mahomes, sitting the first-rounder out for a year really does pay dividends. Smith could relate to Lawrence, being a No. 1 overall pick himself, and he’d also be reunited with the head coach who turned him into that No. 1 overall pick at Utah.
This would be a really fun landing spot for Smith. He wouldn’t be starting for the Jaguars unless the team decided to have him play a few games at the beginning of the year, but he’d get to reunite with his former head coach and GM while not having to get hit on a weekly basis.
Smith proved he’s still good enough to be a starter this past season, but with his recent injuries, are teams willing to gamble on that notion? If the Jaguars want to bring Smith in, they should do so in a heartbeat. It could be a franchise-saving move.
