Many thought Drew Brees would have announced his retirement a week or two after the Super Bowl but when will the announcement truly come?

2021 has already been an unpredictable year with the NFL being a drop in the bucket of how things have changed. One thing hasn’t changed though and that’s Drew Brees. Even though most of us thought we’d hear a retirement announcement or at least see some kind of clue, things have mostly been left in the dark.

While Brees hasn’t retired, a lot of guys around his age have decided to hang it up including his former teammate, Philip Rivers, Jason Witten, and Greg Olsen. All had long careers and even though they didn’t win Super Bowls, it’s clear they’re proud of their accomplishments. It does set the precedent for what we could be seeing when and if Drew Brees decides to retire.

Along with Brees being mum on the situation, we haven’t heard anything from the New Orleans Saints. No doubt the team is over their crushing loss from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, we haven’t heard any news about the team scouting quarterbacks, planning on concocting a blockbuster trade, or generally any news about the state of the team. Frankly, it’s been baffling, to say the least.

Ultimately, the major question here is if Drew Brees is going to retire and if he decides to, when will we as his fans know? While we don’t have much information to go off of, there is still some time to speculate and be curious about what the future could hold for Brees.

What will 2021 look like for Drew Brees and his future with the New Orleans Saints?

Looking back at the 2020 season, it seemed like Drew Brees was going to hang it up. However, we got an Instagram post from him in early 2020 in which he explained he was coming back. It was a major sigh of relief from Saints fans. Brees posted a picture announcing his return on February 18th, 2020 which was the perfect time to reassure fans and give us an idea of what the 2020 season would look like.

Fast-forward to 2021, Brees has yet to even mention retirement on any of his social media accounts and has yet to confirm if he’s going to return for another year. For Brees, this is a difficult decision as he’s getting older and needs a lot of time to think about what his decision will be. As fans though, it’s particularly difficult to be patient as Drew Brees truly feels like he’s the backbone of the New Orleans Saints.

If Brees does decide to return in 2021, it will be questionable, to say the least. That idea comes from the fact that Brees decided to reduce his salary in 2021. That’s a major step in the retirement direction as it’s unlikely he’ll want to play for less money. While money hasn’t always been the deciding factor for him, it’s a nice incentive considering the damage his body has sustained within the past few seasons.

Coupled with the fact that Brees already has post-retirement plans, it doesn’t leave much room for speculation. Even though it sucks to think about Drew Brees not leading the Saints, it’s likely to be a reality very soon. If Brees does decide to stick it out for another year and hopefully get to the Super Bowl, it’s only going to be for 2021. He’s already dealt with a lot of injuries and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if he decided to play one more year and then call it quits.

Then again, Brees might have already made his decision and is sitting on it until it’s right for him to announce it. Either way, the impact Drew Brees has had on New Orleans is immeasurable and no matter what happens, he’ll always have a place in that city. When Drew Brees is ready to tell us, we’ll know his decision. Until then, it’s more guessing games and hopes that the New Orleans Saints will reign over the NFL once again.
