Dynasty Fantasy Football rookie quarterback rankings: Tier 2

4. Zach Wilson – BYU

It wouldn’t surprise us one bit if Jones, Trask, or both ends up being a better pro than Zach Wilson; we almost slid Wilson down a tier, but we’ll keep him here for now given his pinpoint accuracy, above-average arm strength, and lightning-quick release. We are a bit concerned by his lean build and lack of mobility but we are undeterred by unsubstantiated reports of self-centeredness.

Wilson, who should be able to add muscle to his 6-3 203 pound frame, completed 73.5 percent of his passes in 2020, the NCAA’s second-best mark. He also threw 33 touchdowns and only three interceptions, an 11-to-1 ratio that’s had few equals in NCAA history.

We expect Wilson to go in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, and expect him to earn a starting job in the NFL sooner rather than later. However, given his lack of mobility, we worry about his ceiling from a fantasy football perspective; we see him as a starting caliber QB2 in dynasty Superflex leagues.

3. Trey Lance – North Dakota State

Perhaps the most polarizing player on this list, Lance played a grand total of one game in 2020, an underwhelming performance that left scouts with more questions than answers. He displayed a lack of touch and feel on his passes, and has only 18 games of film for scouts and teams to break down.

Some unfairly raise questions about Lance based on the recent implosion of former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, but Lance’s highlight film proves that he’s a legitimate prospect in his own right. His reads and progressions require polish, yet he projects to be one of the fastest and most mobile quarterbacks in this entire draft class.

Additionally, Lance boasts premium arm strength and impressive deep ball accuracy, something several NFL teams desperately need from the quarterback position at the moment. The idea of him going to the Carolina Panthers and working with Joe Brady makes our hearts flutter a bit.

Lance is the most boom-or-bust option in this tier, but he’ll be a sure-fire first round pick in this year’s NFL Draft. He arguably offers as much upside to dynasty fantasy football enthusiasts as anyone not named “Trevor Lawrence,” and should be a first round pick in nearly all Superflex rookie drafts in 2021.

2. Justin Fields – Ohio State

The second-most polarizing player in the 2021 Draft class, Fields has been the target of lazy “Ohio State quarterbacks always bust” analysis from armchair critics who don’t know talent when they see it outduel the consensus top quarterback prospect of the last several years on the national stage in a playoff game.

Let us put one thing to rest: Fields is legit and, as someone who married into a die-hard Michigan Wolverines family, that last sentence was painful to write.

Fields is a great field surveyor and rarely makes a poor read. However, some scouts question his ability to run through his reads at an NFL-caliber pace. Fields’ accuracy through three seasons with Georgia and Ohio State is impressive: he boasts a career completion percentage of 68.4 percent, and has thrown 63 touchdowns and only nine interceptions over the last two seasons combined (two games).

Fields will be a slam-dunk top-10 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft; we anticipate that he’ll go in the top five, perhaps top three. Thanks to impressive mobility, elite ball placement ability, top shelf accuracy, and impressive pocket patience, Fields should be a top three pick in just about every Superflex rookie draft this season.
