CB. 24. player. 55. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Syracuse. Ifeatu Melifonwu

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a name that’s synonymous with tough defense. Once known as the ‘Steel Curtain’, Pittsburgh’s defenders have had a reputation for playing tough and making opposing offenses work for every inch of ground they gave.

Even now, they remain a good unit, finishing third in yards surrendered during the 2020 season according to Pro Football Reference. That doesn’t mean they were perfect because there was one position that could use some help — cornerback.

Pittsburgh currently has Joe Haden, Steven Nelson, and Mike Hilton at the position and that unit is decent but not great. Plus, Haden is inching closer to the end of his career meaning they can use a young understudy. Enter Ifeatu Melifonwu from Syracuse.

Considered a zone-coverage guy during his time with the Orange, Melifonwu did a lot to erase that stigma during the Senior Bowl. He showed off his ability in man coverage, which is something that will help his stock tremendously.

The younger brother of former Connecticut star — and a second-round pick — Obi Melifonwu, Ifeatu has great athletic bloodlines. He might not be as popular as his brother was when he was coming into the league, but he’s poised to be selected higher and should have a much more productive NFL career.
