2021 NFL Mock Draft: Trey Lance to Panthers, Packers nab big OT over 3 full rounds
By Randy Gurzi
The Philadelphia Eagles have already made some big splashes since the end of the 2020 season. After watching their team fall apart under head coach Doug Pederson, the front office decided to pull the plug on his tenure. This was a bit of a surprise given the fact that Pederson won a Super Bowl for them in 2017 — the only Super Bowl win in franchise history.
With him gone, they hired Nick Sirianni — a 39-year-old who spent the past three seasons serving as the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts. Sirianni worked under Frank Reich, the coach who was formerly an Eagles offensive coordinator back in 2016 and 2017. Reich was there when Carson Wentz was playing at an elite level and the hiring of Sirianni made it seem as though they were hoping to help Wentz rediscover his magic. That idea ended up being wrong as Philly then traded Wentz to Indianapolis, reuniting him with Reich.
As for the Eagles, they seem ready to roll with Jalen Hurts in 2021. Whether or not you agree with that move, it seems to be the way they’re leaning and if so, they need to surround the young quarterback with as much talent as possible. They begin that process here by taking Devonta Smith, the Heisman Trophy winner from a season ago. Smith is one of the more explosive receivers in this class and just put together one of the best campaigns in recent memory.
Adding him will mark the second season in a row they used a first-round pick on a wideout but with Jalen Reagor not yet asserting himself as a No. 1 wideout, the Eagles need to be proactive and continue to add players who can make plays in the passing game. And that’s exactly what they get with this selection.
