Green Bay Packers: 5 Budget free agents to target for 2021
By Joe Kipp
1. Josh Reynolds, WR
Fans have been asking for the Packers to sign a receiver for the past few seasons. One player to keep an eye on in free agency is Josh Reynolds. A former fourth round draft choice by the Los Angeles Rams, Reynolds has never played a feature role, which is why his numbers aren’t very flashy. But when watching the tape, he stands out whenever he touches the ball.
The Packers would benefit greatly from Reynolds’ presence thanks to his hands and route running ability. Aaron Rodgers needs a reliable safety blanket opposite of Davante Adams. While they’re solid players, Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling simply had too many dropped passes last season. Reynolds would provide a big-bodied target (6-3) for Rodgers underneath.
If there’s anything to take away from Reynolds’ play the last few years, it’s that he’s improved in every single season of his career. He had his best season in 2020, posting 52 receptions for 618 yards and two touchdowns. And that’s with Jared Goff throwing him the ball.
Because he’s somewhat of an unknown at this point in his career, Reynolds likely wouldn’t break the bank, especially in year when the salary cap is extremely deflated. Another underrated factor here is that coach Matt LaFleur served as the Rams’ offensive coordinator in 2017 during Reynolds’ rookie season. This would be a signing that wouldn’t get many people excited at first, but would later prove to be extremely wise.
