NFL Draft 2021 Pro Comparisons: Penei Sewell → Jason Peters

So many people have said that Penei Sewell would be the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft if Trevor Lawrence had stayed in school for another year. There’s a reason for this and it’s because Sewell is one of the best offensive line prospects the draft has seen in a long time.

He hasn’t even played a game since 2019 because he chose to opt-out and he’s still regarded by most as the top offensive lineman in this year’s draft pool. That’s how highly NFL scouts think of this kid.

But when you throw on the tape, it’s not hard to understand why he’s rated so high. Sewell is better at pass protection than he is at run blocking, but this isn’t to say he’s a slouch when he’s run blocking though. The 6-foot-5, 325-pound tackle has no problem pummeling defenders when he’s clearing a lane downfield for a ball-carrier.

Why he compares to Jason Peters:

Like Sewell, Jason Peters is an offensive tackle with a very wide frame. Peters wasn’t even drafted, but once he was given the opportunity to be a starting left tackle at the NFL level, he never looked back.

Peters has been an excellent pass blocker during his pro career with the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles. He’s also done well as a run blocker and his wide frame is something that tends to throw defenders off when he’s running towards them much quicker than they anticipated.
