NFL Draft 2021 Pro Comparisons: Joseph Ossai → DeMarcus Ware

If this hasn’t been noticed already, there are a number of talented edge rushers that will be available in this year’s NFL Draft. Former Texas pass rusher Joseph Ossai is one who most expect to be drafted in the first round.

During most of his college career, most of his duties were closer to what a more traditional linebacker would do. But in 2020, Texas had him line up more with his hand in the dirt. This allowed him to showcase more of his skills as a dangerous pass rusher.

In nine appearances with Texas last season, Ossai finished with 55 tackles (15.5 for a loss), 5.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles. When he was more of a normal linebacker instead of an edge rusher in 2019, he ended up with 90 tackles, (13.5 for a loss), five sacks, two interceptions, and one forced fumble in 13 games.

Why he compares to DeMarcus Ware:

Former Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos defender DeMarcus Ware is one of the most notable pass rushers to ever play in the state of Texas. As a 3-4 outside linebacker whose primary duty was to bring down the opposing quarterback, Ware developed into one of the top sack machines in the NFL during his time in the league.

For those that have watched Texas and the Cowboys over the years, Ossai possesses a number of traits that are similar to what Ware used to do out on the field. Especially when it comes to speed and the relentlessness to never give up on the task at hand.

Ossai has the talent to be a successful pass rusher in the NFL like Ware. It just depends on how his pro team wants to use him in their defense.
